We had seen Gannets on our Norwegian Cruise, but it was only in August 2004 that I first saw one from Barton - a single bird out over the sea heading towards the Isle of Wight. The chances of ever photographing them from the shore with a handheld camera did not look good!

However, one bright morning in September, I was surprised to find that a large group of birds circling over the sea consisted mainly of gannets. They didn't show up at all in the viewfinder, but I pressed the button anyway, more in hope than expectation.

This picture is the best of the resulting shots. It will enlarge just enough to confirm that the wheeling birds are indeed gannets.
