The benefits of being accompanied by more experienced birdwatchers were amply illustrated when we came across four small waders on a Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust walk around Keyhaven.

In Winter plumage they were very reminiscent of Dunlin but seemed just a little too big. According to the book, the Knot has greyish green legs but, looking into the sun, it wasn't possible to see any leg colour on these birds. However, the prominent eye stripe and short bill, as well as the size, are other good identification clues.
