For years the only glimpses we got of Redwings were in the New Forest, usually around holly trees on Winter walks. All attempts at photography were foiled by the shadows cast by the trees.

Then, during a record-breaking cold snap, a group of six turned up in our garden. Not only did they hang around all day but also were good enough to pose in the sunshine occasionally.

I went a bit mad photographing these birds because, after waiting seven years for the opportunity, who knows when we may next get another chance?

After a few hours, the Redwings were joined by a single Fieldfare. This last picture was in deep shade but it does at least serve to show the significant size difference between the two birds.
