T61 Diary - May 2010

As mentioned in the main diary, the trailing edge is not built as per plan. As you can see, the plan calls for the trailing edges of the ribs to be slotted to take a ply strip then infilled with balsa above and below. Instead, I used full depth balsa infill pieces then sanded them down to just below the top of the ribs before glueing on a 0.4mm ply facing. The end result is both strong and straight. However, despite all my efforts the ribs don't all line up perfectly with the ply D box and/or trailing edge facing so I will be faced with a fair bit of building up and sanding back at some stage.

Although I used spruce as specified for the upper aileron spar, balsa was substituted for the lower one. I fitted the lower spar first, with the T.E. spacing blocks just pinned in place.

Then the ribs were notched for the upper spar and chocked up to set the washout whilst the T.E. pieces and top spar were glued in. The aileron was then cut free before fitting the various facings.
