Welkin Diary - August 2008

This was my first drawing of an Ivan-style retract unit for the Welkin (you can click to enlarge it). It uses a very sharp bend in the leg to bring the pivot point forward enough to give a 90 degree retract angle. The operating crank BE is to be controlled by a servo or bellcrank mounted in the wing.

All looked okay until I tried to draw a front view and realised that, with the pivot point A so low down, there was insufficient width at that point of the nacelle to accommodate the mechanism. So, back to the drawing board for another go.

This second attempt has a less acute bend in the leg, raising the pivot point. It also shows the leg pivoting in saddle clamps attached to a bulkhead. As you can see, I took the opportunity at this stage to work out where the firewall needed to be positioned to back-mount my motors, using 2inch diameter spinners.

This looked sufficiently promising for me to embark on making a working mock-up.
