There were three or four of these birds on a lake in the Lymington salt marshes. They were diving frequently and I must admit that I had no idea what they were. Their fluffy appearance was reminiscent of ducklings of some sort - but, it being January, this seemed unlikely!

 


 

These two photographs, although taken at long range, were nonetheless good enough to identify the bird, which apparently is resident, although more likely to be found by the coast in Winter.

Some eleven years later, and I managed to get a picture of a very different looking bird, this time in full breeding plumage.
