This railway ascends more than 860m on the 20km journey from Flåm to Myrdal, passing through 20 tunnels, most of them hewn through the rock by hand. It is a conventional 'adhesion' railway (not a funicular) and has a gradient of 1:18 over most of its length.

The picture on the right shows one of the open tunnels or snow shelters.

As you can see, we had beautiful weather and the views on the way up were spectacular.

Partway up we stopped at the Kjosfossen waterfall, which has a free fall of 305ft. Ethereal music played and water nymphs appeared!

As we continued up the line, past more stunning scenery, the snow started to take over from the running water.

We got off the train at Vatnahalsen.
